Deadwater Fell ending: The 5 big questions from the Deadwater Fell finale

WARNING: This story contains spoilers for the last episode of Deadwater Fell

One question on everyone’s minds has finally been answered – who killed the Kendricks? Fans of the Channel 4 show were split over who had killed Kate Kendrick (played by Anna Madeley) and her children. In the end it was her husband Tom (David Tennant) who was revealed as the killer.

Will Tom go to prison?

In the final scenes of the last episode viewers see police officers arriving to speak to Tom.

There is nothing to suggest he has been jailed but there are hints throughout the episode.

At the beginning he insists he is not guilty but his lawyer warns he may face a lengthy sentence and his trial is in a matter of weeks.

He later fires his lawyer after she suggests a jury would see through him.

Was Tom meant to die in the fire?

In one of the flashbacks towards the end of the episode we see Tom calling his mum Carol (Maureen Beattie).

Just after he kills his family he says to her: “I just wanted you to know I tried my best, I did my best mum, bye.”

His message sounds as if he was speaking to her for the final time.

He then injects himself with the same drug used to kill his family – except he wakes up in hospital after being saved from the house fire.

He looks shocked when he wakes up, suggesting he was intending to die with his wife Kate (Anna Madeley) and children.

Is Carol trying to run away from Tom?

In the final episode we notice Carol’s home is suddenly up for sale.

Family friend Jess Milner (Cush Jumbo) raises it with Carol, saying “I didn’t realise you were selling?”

Carol nervously replies saying the house is getting too much for her these days.

But it could be that she is selling up to outrun and escape the grasp of her deranged son.

Why did Tom lie about his dad?

Tom pays Jess a visit saying he needs to tell her the truth about what happened before the fire.

He tells Jess his dad was violent and used to abuse him when he was younger.

However, when Jess confronts Carol about the claims, she says it is a lie and her husband Michael was “the kindest man”.

Tom may have lied to try and get Jess to sympathise with him, and force her to think Kate was guilty instead of him.
