Mr Thompson was suspended from his BBC duties after he used the phrase “handbags” during the commentary for BBC Radio Lincolnshire during Lincoln City’s match against Accrington Stanley. After listeners “raised concerns” about the football pundit’s use of the term, it was decided Mr Thompson would “take a break”. Debating the decision on ITV Good Morning Britain, Piers Morgan raged at the latest politically correct spin on a commonly used phrase.

He blasted: “Oh for goodness sake, get better male pundits!

“Grow a pair. Oops, I just said grow a pair.

“That’s sexist.

“Everything is sexist!”

The phrase “handbags” is often used in matchday commentary to describe an incident with sportsmen who fight or threaten to fight but without intent to inflict harm.

After complaints from listeners, the BBC announced: “After listeners raised concerns, Steve acknowledged some of his comments on air didn’t meet the standards we expect.

“He is taking a break but will be back in the New Year.”
