NTAs 2020: Viewers are left fuming after Mrs Brown’s Boys beats Fleabag to take home best comedy award
Viewers were left unimpressed when Mrs. Brown’s Boys beat out the likes of Fleabag, Sex Education, Derry Girls and Afterlife to take home the NTA for best comedy.
Brendan O’Carroll, 64, who plays Mrs. Brown, and his wife Jennifer Gibney, 55, who plays Cathy Brown, went on stage to accept the award at London’s 02 Arena.
But fans took to social media in droves, insisting the other shows in the category were more deserving of the award.
Not happy: Viewers were left unimpressed when Mrs. Brown’s Boys beat out the likes of Fleabag, Sex Education, Derry Girls and Afterlife to take home the NTA for best comedy
One wrote: ‘Mrs Brown’s Boys beating Derry Girls and Fleabag at the National Television Awards is yet another example of why the British public shouldn’t be allowed to vote for things.’
Another said: ‘There are many mysterious in this mad world of ours. But how on earth Mrs Brown’s Boys wins a National Television Award is the most unexplained riddle of all of them.’
Another viewer weighed in, saying: ‘Mrs Brown’s Boys beating Derry Girls and Fleabag at the #NTAs showing that in Britain female led comedy is ok but only when a man does it.’
One viewer reacted to the win with: ‘Mrs Brown’s Boys just beat Fleabag and Derry Girls at the National Television Awards. Help me God.’ [sic]
Response: Fans took to social media in droves, insisting the other shows in the category were more deserving of the award
Opinion: Other viewers felt Ricky Gervais’ Afterlife should have taken home the award
Ricky Gervais, creator and star of Afterlife, weighed in on the reaction to Mrs Brown’s Boys win and called the people complaining about it ‘losers’.
He wrote: ‘What a f*****g bunch of losers. Congratulations to Mrs Brown’s Boys. Democracy always wins.
‘Be nice in defeat and know that you are still the best fans in the world. Thanks to everyone who voted.’
Fleabag has been a hit at awards season this year with Phoebe Waller-Bridge receiving acclaim at the Critics’ Choice Awards, the Emmys and the Golden Globes.

Meanwhile, Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly made history at the NTAs as they won the Best Presenter Award for the nineteenth year in a row.
As well as scooping the prize for Best Presenters, Ant and Dec were also presented the Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award for I’m A Celebrity – which they dedicated to those who have battled the bush fires in Australia.
Another big winner on the night was Jesy Nelson, who broke down in tears when she scooped a trophy in the Factual category for her documentary Odd One Out.
The Little Mix star admitted she was ‘overwhelmed’ as she accepted the top prize for her heart-wrenching film, which focused on the bullying and trolling she endured since rising to fame.
