Chief content officer for The Walking Dead Scott M. Gimple has confirmed former recurring character Heath is likely to make his eventual return. The resourceful survivor hasn’t been seen since the seventh season of the AMC zombie series, but could play a crucial role in season eleven or an upcoming spin-off.

The Walking Dead’s CCO Scott M. Gimple has assured fans the mystery of Heath’s (played by Corey Hawkins) disappearance will eventually be resolved.
The TV series’ head honcho also claimed he’s determined to work with the breakout star again, assuring fans the series favourite survived his fate in season seven.
Gimple’s update on the ongoing series came when Insider brought up Heath’s cryptic ‘PPP’ key card which left fans scratching their heads in his final episode.
The showrunner admitted surprise at the question, saying: “Oh, wow. That’s a deep cut.”
Though he then reassured readers: “I hope we do, too. I know what it means.”
Heath hasn’t been seen since the first half of The Walking Dead’s seventh season, which saw Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and the Alexandria Safe Zone taken over by Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and the Saviours.
During a supply run with fellow survivor Tara Chambler (Alanna Masterson), the two get separated and Heath is taken prisoner by Scavengers, his current fate unknown.
His abandoned key card seemed to have been left as a clue to his whereabouts, but viewers are still none the wiser as TWD prepares to wrap up its tenth season.
As the show’s leading decision-maker, Gimple served as showrunner during the zombie epic’s fourth through eighth seasons.
Even so, the CCO confessed he may need to make some drastic changes to his original plan as the world of The Walking Dead continues to expand.
He elaborated: “For all I know, by the time we get to it, I might have to make it mean something else than I had originally intended.
“God knows I’m determined to work with Corey again. Another definitive, yet hopeful, you will.”

TWD alum Corey Hawkins certainly made one of the biggest impacts of any recurring character, despite only appearing in five episodes total.
He has since appeared in blockbuster films like Kong: Skull Island and BlackKklansman, and served as the lead for two major TV series, 24: Legacy and Quibi’s Survive.
Hawkins’ stint in the zombie apocalypse was so memorable some fans were even tipping his return as the mysterious masked survivor introduced in season ten, before Okea Eme-Akwari’s casting was confirmed.
Still, Gimple’s comments have reignited hopes Heath’s whereabouts will finally be revealed.
With plenty more Walking Dead to come, Corey Hawkins could eventually reprise his role in the eleventh and final instalment of the flagship series, or any of the show’s numerous upcoming spin-offs.
Another season of World Beyond is in the pipeline following last week’s finale, and Tales of The Walking Dead promises to resurrect some fan favourites from the series’ golden age.
Furthermore, there’s a chance Heath could team with Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) in their upcoming follow-up, or show up in Rick Grime’s impending film trilogy.
The Walking Dead returns March 1, 2021 on AMC.
