Thousands of households to get £150 free cash next week as councils hand out tax rebates

THOUSANDS of households will get £150 of free cash next week as local authorities hand out tax rebates.

The council tax refund is to help lower income families cope with the cost of living crisis.

People who live in homes in council tax bands A to D are eligible for the one-off pay out, which does not have to be paid back.

The government said around 80% of households will benefit from the freebie as energy bills have soared.

Rebates have already started to land in some people's bank accounts, but the payment schedule varies across the country.

Those who pay their council tax bills by direct debit are getting the cash first, as the local authority already has their bank account details.

St Helen's Council has delayed the processing of payments from May 13 to May 16, meaning money should start being received from Monday.
