What would you say to someone whos being taught to feel bad with a song like Gone by Rihanna. Thats the real problem with these songs theyre so catchy that even when the lyrics make you feel bad, you actually want the artist to feel good with the music. In particular, this song by Rihanna and Calvin Harris is so catchy and danceable that it makes me question my own judgment about the lyrics. Gone is about a guy whos gone on a date and decided to go back to his friends instead. Ive always thought that Id end up with someone who would take you home to meet my family and show you a picture of my dog. You know, like The note said, Hey, man, Ill be home in a couple hours, but really Im not going home to be alone. Im going through a breakup and I dont want to be alone. But you know what makes me feel horrible about this song. Not the lyrics, which I see as pretty harmless. The melody is the reason that Im not going to date or have sex with this guy whos gone back to his friends. Maybe its not a catchy melody, but if that were the sole reason I werent gonna date, I would have Gone playing on repeat through my brain as I do whatever boring stuff Im supposed to get done. Im not going to talk to this friend Im hanging out with or go out on a date with that person, so why not use the last song on my playlist to do whats most important. This song is most important because its catchy, but I dont want to be catchy. I think the reason this melody is so effective is because its so catchy. Its not a simple, catchy melody that makes me want to talk to this friend Im hanging out with. Instead, this melody makes me want to put him and his friends in my pocket as I walk past them or as I drive by. It makes me want to have sex with this guy in my car or in my office. It makes me want to break up with this guy if he doesnt take me out to go to the movies. I dont need to hear any of that Gone to make me think its not the right guy for me. Im not interested in guys who take me home to meet my family and show me a picture.
