Unless you’re having guests round, you probably don’t think much aboutyour crockery.

Take a look in your cupboards, though, and you’ll notice that your plates, bowls and saucers are covered in scratches – ones you can’t un-see once you’ve spotted them.

It’s frustrating to spend money on nice tableware only for it to be wrecked through everyday use, and not the impression you want to make ahead of a dinner party.

But not only are these marks not scratches at all, they’re easy to remove with a hero product costing less than £5.

TikToker Joel, who goes by @nanananabeedah on the platform, shared his revelation regarding the annoying abrasions recently, racking up 2.9million views for his hack to get rid of them.

‘Do you also have old plates like these?’ asked the creator, showing off his white crockery. ‘If you’re like me you thought they were scratched beyond repair. Well, think again.’

Bar Keepers Friend is now also my friend I can’t believe all these years I thought there was some coating I had scratched off my plates. Today I learned (yes, actually today) an that they can be made like new

Joel went on to explain: ‘Today I learned that these grey scratches are actually metal streaks left behind by your knives and other cutlery and can be literally wiped off.’

‘I can’t believe all these years I thought there was some coating I had scratched off my plates.’

Proving his point, he then uses Bar Keepers Friend cleaning powder on the plate, wetting the surface and sprinkling over the product.

After using a microfibre cloth to gently scrub the plate, the marks come right off in seconds, leaving Joel saying he felt like ‘a magician’.

£4.94 was £5.48

‘Bar Keepers Friend is now also my friend,’ added the TikToker, and thousands of others agreed, including one person who commented: ‘You just saved my plates! Thank you.’

‘The way that I just ran into my kitchen to try this. It works!’ said another, while a third added: ‘OMG I can’t believe this! I just cleaned my Le Creuset set which I thought was scratched to buggery and now looks new.’

As an alternative to Bar Keepers Friend, some suggested trying baking soda or The Pink Stuff paste. According to the replies, magic eraser sponges also work in the same way.

It’s definitely worth trying a patch test before experimenting on anything valuable, as well as wearing gloves and ensuring you rinse everything thoroughly before use.

If your crockery was fit for the bin, however, it could be the hack to bring it back to life.

Do you have a story to share?

Get in touch by emailing MetroLifestyleTeam@Metro.co.uk.
