Victoria Beckham has hit back at claims she was ‘too Posh to push’ when she gave birth to son Brooklyn.

The 49 year old former Spice Girl, who went by the nickname Posh, addressed the taunts on her husband David’s new Netflix series BECKHAM – revealing how she was told it would be unsafe for her to go into labour with their first child. Victoria gave birth to Brooklyn, now 24, by caesarean section in 1999 – and she was dubbed ‘too Posh to push’ in some parts of the media, who believed the method of delivery was a lifestyle choice.

But, speaking on the Netflix show, she said: “I wasn't too posh to push, I was told it would not be safe for me to be put into labour.”

She did not specify why it would not be safe to give birth vaginally.

Victoria and David also opened up on their fears for Brooklyn’s safety after he was born. Their eldest son was born the year after the 1998 World Cup – a tournament that saw David become the most hated man in England after he was shown a red card in the last 16 knockout match against Argentina for a petulant kick out at opposition midfielder Diego Simeone.

Reduced to 10 men, England managed to hold on for a 2-2 draw but eventually lost the tie on penalties – with David blamed for the Three Lions being knocked out of the tournament.

The hatred that followed led to David being abused and spat at on the street. An effigy of him was even hanged outside a Croydon pub.

David, speaking about the night Brooklyn was born, during this this turbulent time, said: “I all of a sudden thought, "how am I going to protect him?"

“That night Brooklyn slept next to Victoria, she said "come sleep on the bed with me" and I said "absolutely not", I slept with my head facing the door, because I was paranoid someone was going to steal him.

“It's meant to be a happy moment, and it was a happy moment of course, but I was worried. I didn't want him to come into this life at a time when I was going through what I was going through.”

The couple also opened up on how the family had received kidnapping plots from the time Brooklyn was born. Famously, the now-defunct News of the World claimed it had foiled an alleged plot in 2002.

Victoria said: “We were getting kidnapping threats right from when we had Brooklyn and you can't even explain how that feels because we couldn't hide. These are all things that are now coming back to me and I find it quite stressful now because I've blocked so much of it out and I think David has as well.

“Imagine having a baby and having death threats. David had to play knowing this was all going on and I was on my own in an apartment with a baby.”

Victoria went on to discuss the abuse she faced when she went to watch David play during that time. One infamous, vulgar chant from fans went: “Posh Spice takes it up the a**e.”

She said: “I'd go to the games with Brooklyn and the abuse was – it's hard to explain.

“It's embarrassing, it's hurtful. I remember sitting down and the lady next to me turned and she didn't know what to say, she said, ‘do you want a polo?’

“Because what do you say when you sit next to someone and 75,000 people have been saying you take it up the a**e? We did not know what to do. It felt like we were drowning.”

David and Victoria went on to welcome three more children – Romeo, 21, Cruz, 18, and Harper, 12.
