Zara McDermott has opened up about "the hardest morning ever" following her axe from Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday night, 28 October.

The former Love Island star, 26, and Strictly pro Graziano Di Prima, 29, faced Adam Thomas and Luba Mushtuk in the dance off, with Adam, 35, being saved by the judges.

On Monday, Zara appeared on Strictly: It Takes Two to recap the weekend with host Fleur East.

Zara said: "It's been a real up and down of emotions for the last few days, just processing everything. I think today was the hardest morning ever, not going to training.

"I literally texted him [Graziano] the moment I woke up with a sad face because I spent seven weeks, 12 hours a day with this man, and now I'm not any more and it's sad – really sad."

Speaking about her performance on Saturday night, which was Halloween Week, she said: "I think I was a bit gutted when that just didn't quite happen, but I just think we put everything into it and I physically couldn't have done more than I did."

"I was worried when I saw our position on the leaderboard but I didn't know what to expect because for me, I really had quite high hopes for myself through the week."

Pro dancer Graziano praised Zara, saying he's "never had a partner who worked as hard," and revealed she "never complained" despite the gruelling training over the last seven weeks.

After watching a recap of her best moments on the show, Zara broke down in tears.

When Fleur asked the documentary maker what she would miss most about the experience, Zara said: "This person here," pointing at Graziano.

"And not spending every day with him. I said I wasn't going to cry any more today but here I am again. This human being right here is what I'm going to miss the most because he is the most special, beautiful soul in the world."

She had previously called their bond 'unbreakable'.

Zara and Graziano exited the competition after their Charleston dance to Jeepers Creepers by Al Donahue and his Orchestra failed to impress judges on Sunday’s pre-recorded BBC One show.

She had come back triumphant from two previous dance-offs but was unable to snatch victory for a third time.

Strictly Come Dancing returns on Saturday, November 4 at 7.05pm on BBC One
