short list for the Luthor role.<\/p>\n<p>The Lex Luthor character made his first comic book appearance in Action Comics #23 in April 1940, created by Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.<\/p>\n<p>The villainous character has been portrayed on the big screen several times, first by Gene Hackman alongside Christopher Reeve as the title character in 1978&#8217;s Superman: The Movie and two of its sequels.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Spacey took over the character in 2006&#8217;s Superman Returns, going up against Brandon Routh&#8217;s Man of Steel.<\/p>\n<p>Jesse Eisenberg took over the character in 2016&#8217;s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017&#8217;s Justice League alongside Henry Cavill&#8217;s Superman.<\/p>\n<p>The character has also been played many times on the small screen as well, with John Shea portraying the villain in\u00a0Lois &amp;
