Kate Garraway has shared a heartbreaking update on husband Derek Draper, admitting she's never felt like he is “safe.”

Derek, 56, contracted Covid-19 in 2020 and ended up in a medically induced coma. In total, he spent 13 months in hospital with 24-hour care before being able to go back home.

He has since been left with long-lasting organ damage and has been re-admitted to hospital several times over the past three years. Kate, who married Derek in 2005, has become his full-time carer as a result.

And this week Kate has revealed that Derek is "living in the world of the unknown" in a candid update about his health. The GMB star also confessed that she has never felt like he is “safe.”

Speaking on the Emotionally Speaking podcast with host Peter Leonard, Kate said: "When he wakes up in the morning it is heartbreaking. Because it feels as though you are watching someone who may have been inhabiting his old life in his dreams.

“And then he wakes up and you see the cloud descend of the battle he has ahead." Reflecting on his overall health, she went on: "If you look back, there is some progress, he has [said] more words now and his voice is stronger.”

Kate then added how at times she will hear "a little bit of a Chorley accent". However, in terms of his body, Derek cannot sit up on his own without help. He is also relying on carers and family for help. Kate also noted how his brain, which was once “his allay and friend" is now his "enemy".

"I think he's had a big emotional struggle. One of the challenges with Derek is we've never felt like he is safe, so every infection and rush back to hospital might be the moment he is taken from us. We are still hopeful he will improve but we have no clear timeline on this," she added.

It comes after Kate revealed on Loose Women last week that Derek was back in hospital. The TV favourite said: “He's actually back in the hospital at the moment. I haven't talked about this, but not the horrific drama fortunately, because there have been lots of, as we all experience, referrals and cancellations.”

Kate went on: “He's gotten back in for something that he began last year, which he needed the second part of which will hopefully mean he has more movement, physical fractures. So it's a positive hospital thing. So he's actually not at home at the moment. So when the visiting game, but hopefully won't be in for too long."
