It emerged this week that Conservative MP Bob Seely hopes to see the House of Commons bring forward legislation to strip Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of their official titles.

The issue of removing titles that were given in the late Queen's gift is slightly more complicated as any attempt would have to be fronted by Parliament, with a statute passed by both the House of Commons and the Lords.

But even if the decision was made, a leading royal expert has spoken to OK! about why any move like that would not be pushed by King Charles as he would not want to appear "vindictive".

Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond explained: "The bill put forward by Bob Seely hasn’t been selected for the Private Members Bill ballot so it’s not going anywhere at the moment.

"It is though interesting that the social media rumblings about stripping the Sussexes of their titles has reached Parliament .

"I don’t think King Charles would be happy about any overt move to strip Harry and Meghan of titles. He is not vindictive and this would be seen as that.

"It would obviously deepen the rift and the hurt and would almost be like a replay of the lifelong bitterness the Duke of Windsor felt when Wallis Simpson was not given the style HRH. He never forgave that 'slight'.

"You would think that, given their new celebrity lifestyle and antipathy to the royal way of life, Harry and Meghan would quietly drop using their titles.

"It seems a cynical move to keep using them in their commercial activities. Just be Harry and Meghan… that’s what they seemed to want, so why not live that life?"

The Duke and Duchess have remained silent following the naming of the two Royal Family members alleged to have made remarks about the colour of their unborn child’s skin.

Their identities first emerged in the Dutch translation of the book Endgame by Omid Scobie that were then reported by news organisations around the world.

Writing in the Mail on Sunday, Mr Seely, the MP for the Isle of Wight, said that few believed Harry and Meghan were not behind claims made in the book and that the use of the race row to smear the Royal Family was “poisonously insidious”.

Mr Seely, a member of the Commons’ Foreign Affairs Committee, wants to adapt laws originally passed in the First World War to strip enemy German nobles of their British titles.

He wrote: “In the next couple of weeks, I shall present a Bill in Parliament to strip the Duke and Duchess of Sussex of their royal titles.

“I’m not a republican and support the monarchy, but after the latest instalment of the couple’s feud with the rest of the Royal Family, I believe that Parliament and the Privy Council should consider a nuclear option.”
