EastEnders fans are convinced they've worked out the identity of the Christmas murder victim.

The BBC On soap has had fans gripped with their festive whodunnit storyline since they aired a dramatic flash-forward episode in February this year but viewers only now have weeks to wait to find out exactly who gets bumped off before 2023 comes to an end.

Six female Walford residents – Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner), Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean), Linda Carter (Kellie Bright), Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal), Kathy Beale (Gillitan Taylforth) and Denise Fox (Diane Parish)– are at the centre of the potential crime, with the new trailer combining all the previous flash-forwards clips which have been teased across the year.

"For whom does the bell toll" reads the caption on the clip, with each character looking either anxious or sombre as Florence and the Machine’s ‘What Kind of Man’ plays in the background. While fans have been thinking who the victim could be, some are convinced it's missing Mick Carter (Danny Dyer).

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan penned: "What happens if Mick returns to save Linda from Dean and is the dead body at Christmas #EastEnders?" Another added: "I’m telling you all the dead body on Christmas Day will be Mick. DONT ASK ME HOW IM TELLING YOU!" A third person said: "What if the body at Christmas is Mick’s" Someone else wrote: "Mick is the body on the floor of The Vic?"

The fan-favourite character, played by Danny Dyer, made his debut back in 2013. Along with the rest of the Carter clan, it didn’t take long for them to get involved in several dramatic storylines. However in 2022, Mick exited the BBC soap in a major blow to fans. As viewers will recall, he seemingly drowned on Christmas Day after rushing to the water to save Linda.

Despite a body never being found, Mick’s death left ex-wife Linda heartbroken and since then, she’s not been able to move in. And in recent scenes she was left stunned when her Mick's brother and her rapist Dean Wicks (Matt Di Angelo) arrived in her kitchen at the Vic.

Matt raped Linda in 2014 and he hasn’t been seen in the famous square for seven years. However last week Dean came back to Walford. To Linda’s horror, Dean is making Albert Square his home again as he was revealed as the Beales' new business partner.

His decision to return is driven by his need to be close to the local hospital where his daughter Jade (Roya Masood) – who has cystic fibrosis – is receiving treatment and awaiting a life-saving lung transplant. However, fans reckon the love of Linda’s life Mick could be a shock return too in a bid to save her from Dean. Over on X, formerly known as Twitter, one person said: "Hmmmm they never found Mick's body you knowwwww – feels like they're leaving the door open for a come back."

Echoing their thoughts, a second penned: "There's been SO much speculation that Mick's coming back. I really hope it's true – he'll be Linda's ‘night in shining armour' & hopefully protect her from Dean's return.” A third agreed: “I have a feeling mick carter is on he’s way back!"

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 7.30pm
