Hairy Bikers star Dave Myers left viewers of the BBC show in tears on Tuesday as he discussed his ongoing battle with cancer.

The 66-year old first revealed he had been diagnosed with the disease in May 2022 and was undergoing chemotherapy treatment. The chef fought on, however, recording a new series with his co-star best pal, Si King.

Now, in a new episode of Hairy Bikers: Coming Home For Christmas, Dave has offered further updates on his condition, with one clip revealing he was having physiotherapy sessions to get him back on his feet. The star is yet to publicly divulge what form of cancer he has.

Opening up on why he kept details of his illness a secret, he explained: "I didn't want to eat. I would fall over quite a lot. By the second lot of chemo my hair came out really quite radically. Your hair, eyelashes, everything just goes. I've never gone on about what sort of cancer I've got because I feel like that's my business."

Dave continued: "I don't want newspapers to run a lottery on how long I've got to live. That's not what I want. I felt so guilty because of the effects it's having on my wife Lil."

Later in the programme Dave expressed his delight after learning he would be able to take to the road again with Si, after previously admitting he'd have to learn to ride his bike again. "My legs are going, the grin, I feel like a hysterical teenager again. I'm going to phone Kingy. It means we can get back on the road together again," he said in an emotional scene.

Fans soon took to X (formerly Twitter) to reveal how they'd been left in tears by Dave's battle and his friendship with Si. One commented: "I watched the Hairy Bikers Christmas programme this evening and am fully choked up by it. What a celebration of life, what a beautiful testament to friendship. I'm glad Dave's still here to make a lovely programme like that." Another added: "Absolutely joyous to see Dave looking so well. Lovely to see the deep friendship between them both. Inspiring and thought provoking."

A third wrote: "Oh my goodness. So emotional, but so good to see Dave looking so well and back on his bike with Si." And a fourth said: "Not expecting to cry watching the hairy bikers. But asking what you want for Christmas and the answer 'you for a bit longer.' Had me in bits."

Last month, meanwhile, Dave opened up on a second ailment that was diagnosed following a routine checkup at the opticians. The star said he was informed he was showing early signs of the disease by an optometrist earlier this year. The NHS defines condition as increased pressure within the eyeball which can cause vision loss and blindness if left untreated.

Luckily, his worrying symptoms were detected early after he had a scan. Now, the cook has been prescribed eye drops to prevent the condition from progressing – and has joined forces with Specsavers in calling for a National Eye Health strategy – to improve the quality of life for those living with sight loss.
